Design Challenge
An experiential Typography project where we were required to choose a character and make experimental typography related to it. In ten weeks, we explored type with image, texture, and place to add or enhance the visual narrative of type. In the end, we made four spreads of newspapers about our persona.

This newspaper is the title page of the newspaper. Using inspirations from the movie (googly eyes and everything bagel) I went crazy with the layout of the newspaper. As a grad student I know the rules of design so that I can break them appropriately and so I did to match the craziness of the movie.
To create water texture, I used a hair gel, placed it on transparent sheet and placed printed letter below it and took hundreds of pictures. Then I used photoshop to extract good parts of letters from those images and merged them into one letter. At the end, I overlayed the water texture on top of all the letters to enhance the visuals and make it “waterier”. 😀
This spread is about variants of Evelyn Wang character that existed in multiple universes in Everything Everywhere All at once.
Type Challenge: Type and Place
Concept: The chosen text was Everywhere, and the place was places where Evelyn existed such as Professional Kitchen, Library, Canyons, Theatre, Dojo, Jail, Court, laundromat, Hospital, and Chinese Opera House.
Essentially, the movie was about a generational trauma and how Evelyn did not understand her own daughter. Evelyn was a type of mother who was insensitive towards her daughter and did not have time to understand her.
Type and Place
As a mother, she created “fence” or boundaries between herself and her daughter and never let her daughter Joy to cross them. Every time Joy tried to cross the fence and talk to her mother about her issues, she ended up hurting herself with the pointy fence that her mother built. Therefore, the chosen text is “Mother” and the place to add meaning to type’s narrative is Iron Fence.
The resolution between mother and daughter happens when Evelyn recognizes how small and stupid, we are as humans. In the rock universe, Evelyn finally understands her daughter Jobu Tubaki or Joy and says, “We are all small and stupid.”
Type Challenge: Type and Image
Text: The chosen text is SMALL from the conversation.
Image: The conversation is about how large we think we are as humans but in reality, we are so small in the universe. Which makes us stupid to even assume that we are the center of this universe. The image to add to the visual narrative of the text Small are large buildings or structures seen from above, so they look so small. So, I used images of large skyscrapers, bridges from New York City, San Francisco, and Dubai to add to the meaning of the word “Small”.
Bonus Word: Nothing Matters
Challenge: Type and Image
The resolution to Everything Everywhere All at Once is very simple and it is “Nothing Matters”. The idea is that we humans collect things but at the end of the day they do not matter.
